BGCC 2nd XI vs Bewdley
Barnards Green entertained Bewdley on a very soft damp wicket following the
weeks torrential rain, after once again losing the toss the green were asked
to make first use of the conditions. Andy wheeler was caught going for an
ill-advised big drive, the fluent innings of Tim Clarke 21 was end in
exactly the same fashion, young James Scullion steadied the innings until he
was bowled for 13, then disaster struck with the next 4 batsmen all failing
to trouble the scorer and Sam Spencer making only 5.The home side were in
danger of being rolled over for an embarrassing total , they were 60 for 8
after 21overs.It was left to the more experienced members of the side to
show more application than their younger team mates.First captain and vice
captain Phil Spencer and Ian Scullion added 48 for the ninth wicket with
Spencer being caught on the boundary for 40, then Glendenning joined
Scullion and they proceeded to grind their way to a reasonable total and at
the same time try and use up their allotted 50 overs, by the start of the
50th over the total was 164 , Scullion was stumped going for a big shot for
a fine 37 leaving Glendenning not for the first time this season undefeated
on 21, the last 2 wickets had put on 104 runs and had put the green in a
position to at least stand a chance of obtaining a positive result. For
Bewdley Fowler 3 for 42 and Darby 5 for 41 bowled well keeping the ball up
and using the conditions well.
In reply openers Jones and Robinson added 79 in 27 overs both had rode their
luck and survived a fine opening bowling spell from Scullion snr and Spencer
jnr, lewis Hooper took the first wicket having Jones caught for a patient 19,
Matt Brookes bowled with great controlled swing and was unlucky not to pick
up more wickets , but he did at least bowl the dangerous Robinson for a
grafting 41, Brookes finished with 1 for 22 off 14 overs, Tom Clack bowled
his best spell of the season and removed Halkon for 4.This left Bewdley on
114 for 3 after 36 over. Spencer snr and Spencer the younger bowled the
final 8 overs , their contrasting styles making inroads into Bewdleys lower
order ,Spencer jnr finished with 2 for 44 off 12 overs, it was left to
skipper Spencer to bowl the last over with the green needing one wicket and
Bewdley 6 to win the game, after four dot balls the skipper bowled a leg
side wide and the batsmen ran 2 , the last ball was not scored off leaving
Bewdley two runs short and a winning draw for the green.Spencer snr finished
with 3 for 20, the green gained 13 points and Bewdley 9.Once again the
Greens young batting line up failed and was rescued by the "oldies", but a
least they redeemed themselves in the field and from a position of 60 for 8
after 21 overs still managed a positive result from the game.
