BGCC 1sts vs Brewood.

Barnards Green 1sts got back to winning ways with comprehensive victory over Brewood

Barnards Green hosted Brewood this weekend seeking a win to help us climb the table and to get revenge over a team that did the double over us last season. Needing maximum points Captain Andy Ford won the toss and chose to bat first.

Jon Dovey and Mark Hooper opened the innings and Heyneke took an early wicket when he bowled Dovey for 7. Alex Hepburn joined Hooper and they soon began to dominate the bowling, taking the total to 50 in the 15th over, then increased the pace bringing up the 100 in the 21st. Brewood Captain Fox rotated the bowling in an attempt to make a breakthrough. A confident looking Hepburn reached 50 with a 4 through long on. Hooper also reached his half century but was trapped LBW by Redrup 2 runs later bringing an impressive partnership of 134 to an end.

Adam Dovey joined Hepburn and with both batsmen scoring freely the Green reached 200 for 2 with 15 overs still remaining. To the delight of a considerable crowd Hepburn reached his debut BGCC century off only 108 balls. Dovey fell next smartly stumped by keeper Smith off Kidson for 29. Elliott Hennessy came in at 5 and was soon joined by Andy Ford as Hepburn’s fine innings was ended when he was clean bowled by Wedge for 113.

Ford batted confidently and clearly intended to set a huge target for Brewood to chase. He hit a quick-fire 35 off 22 balls, including a magnificent straight six to bring up the 200 in the 49th over, before he was well caught by Heyneke to give Kidson his second wicket. Hennessy fell one run later, run out by Fox after a mix-up with Graeme Cessford. Ash Brewer came to the crease with BGCC 286 for 6 with just under 4 overs to go and 300 a distinct possibility. Indeed just two overs later 300 was reached when Brewer steered one through 3rd Man for 4. At the end of their 55 overs BGCC finished 315 for 6, Cessford not out 11 and big-hitting Brewer not out 19 off only 9 balls.

Brewood’s daunting run chase started badly as Southall was caught behind by Brewer off Cessford for 4. Then Fox was run out without facing as Blair Kingsland, fielding in the covers, swooped in, picked up and threw down the stumps in one fluid movement. 8 for 2 soon became 24 for 4 as Cessford grabbed two more wickets – first Kidson was caught by Hennessy at square leg for 12 then Smith nicked one to Brewer for 4. The score had crept up to 52 when Thomason was trapped LBW by Smedley with his first ball. Heyneke hit both fours and sixes off Ford and was on 32 when Ford got revenge when Adam Dovey took a great catch on the long on boundary.

Adam Dovey took his second boundary catch at square leg to dismiss Jelfs for 11 and Cessford claimed his five for as he clean bowled Lunn for a duck. With Brewood on 78 for 8 after 29 overs Ford rotated the bowling to try to take the final two wickets. Wedge looked solid but Redrup was clean bowled by Tim Williams for 5. Byrne and Wedge had stubbornly batted for over 13 overs when Hepburn trapped Wedge LBW for 38, his team’s top score. Byrne was 11 not out as Brewood finished 136 all out in 50.2 overs taking only 3 points from the game. BGCC’s 24 points sees us climb off the bottom of the table.
