On Sunday BGCC 1st XI travelled north to
Coombs Wood on a blisteringly hot afternoon.
Skipper Tim Williams was relieved to see the coin fall favourably and had no
hesitation in electing to bat.
Though the pitch offered some assistance to all bowlers the in form Golder
and Brookes started solidly. When Brookes departed Golder and Hoogstraten
began to flourish and found the boundary regually as they both passed 50.
Phil Harris and Andy Wheeler kept the run rate around 5 but a majestic 60
from Paul Yorke including 6 towering 6’s and a quickfire 23 from Tom Clack
saw the Green close on 286
In reply Coombs Wood raced away in pursuit of the total. Chavla was brutal
on some particulary wayward bowling Keith Brookes and skipper Williams
managed to stem the flow of boundaries but Coombs were still able to score
at 6 runs an over, Brookes then made two vital blows including the prize
scalp of chavla clean bowled.
Lewis Hooper and the hugely impressive Alex Wren on debut continued to drag
the flow of runs back, Wren bowled with great maturity and returned to pick
up his first wicket.
With 80 required an ambulance was called after Sam Beaumount suffered a bad
facial injury attempting a catch.
Phil Harris and Tim Williams then bowled with discipline to gradually
increase the run rate and eventually close out the game as wickets fell
Coombs Wood eventually closed 16 runs short as the Green kept up their 100%
start to the season.
