BGCC 1sts vs Old Hill

Final game victory means top five finish for Green

Barnards green 1st XI hosted Old Hill in the final league game of the season with a possible top 4 and bottom 4 finish possible depending on results.

Old Hill won the toss and chose to field. Captain Andy Ford opened the batting with George Rhodes facing B Cox and Howell. With the score on 7 Ford hit a powerful straight drive off Howell, the bowler dived and got a hand to it deflecting it onto the stumps to run out Rhodes (5) backing up. This brought Alex Hepburn to the crease, and he and Ford built a solid partnership taking the score passed 50 in the 14th over. Ford had reached 40 (his top score of the season in League cricket) when he chipped one up to be caught and bowled by Patel. Alex Milton joined Hepburn but soon departed clean bowled by Davenport for 4. Kev Golder came in and got off the mark with a huge six off a free hit but he too misjudged one from Patel to be caught and bowled for 13.

The Green were 105-4 with 18 overs left when Ash Brewer came in, and he batted in his usual attacking style. His second 6 brought up the 150 in the 39th over, but he too was caught and bowled this time by Islam for 25. Next in was Georgia Hennessy finally getting a chance to bat in the 1st XI, but her inning s was short lived. In a repeat of Rhodes’ dismissal she too was run out backing up by a deflection from bowler Howell.

Hepburn had been accumulating runs and he held the innings together. Jon Dovey came with the score 159-6 with 10 overs left to bat. He started with a boundary off his first ball, hit an impressive lofted drive for 6 and a fine four through the covers to take the Green passed 200 in the 48th over. Dovey was eventually trapped lib by D Cox for 28 off only 17 balls. Rishe Umasuthan and Tim Williams came and went as Howell picked up 2 late wickets. Last man out was Hepburn as he was narrowly run out in the last over for a fine innings of 78. The Green finished 217 all out.

Old Hill started dreadfully - they were 15-5 after 5 overs with Alex Hepburn getting 4 of them. Ahmed as caught behind by Ash Brewer, Davenport caught and bowled, Brosnan lbw and Genders clean bowled for 4. Rishe Umasuthan chipped in with the vital wicket of Patel bowled for 5. Howell and B Cox set about rebuilding the innings, with the youngster Cox playing particularly well. Old Hill passed 50 in the 15th over but soon after Umasuthan grabbed his second wicket as Howell was trapped in front for 16.

After a brief spell from Jon Dovey the Green turned to spin with Andy Ford and George Rhodes. In fact these two combined to dismiss Cox (33) as Rhodes dived high to his left to catch him off Ford. Old Hill went from 75-7 to all out for 87 in the space of 5 overs as Rhodes mopped up the tail. Preece fell lbw for 10, D Cox was caught Brewer for 1 and Islam clean bowled for 4. BGCC’s 20 points sees them hit a top 5 finish for the second season in a row.

The game was followed by the club’s presentation evening with guest ex-pro Steve Kirby. As well as the 1st XI’s achievement the guests were able to celebrate two promotions. The 3rd XI were unbeaten and gained promotion from Worcestershire Div. 5 losing out on the title by just 3 points to Kempsey. The 4th XI went one better and won every single game and took the title and promotion from Div. 5 reserves league. BGCC are looking for cricketers for all levels of the game to join the club for the 2015 season.
