BGCC 1sts vs Shifnal

BGCC 1st XI visited Shifnal this weekend hoping to continue a good winning run but aware that Shifnal had won 4 of their last 5 games to shoot up the table to third.

The warm-up was interrupted by heavy rain so the start was delayed to 13.17 with a revised 44 overs each. Andy Ford won the toss and chose to bowl first. Graeme Cessford opened the bowling and started where he left off last week. First he clean bowled Tom Collins for a duck then took the wicket of the dangerous Richard Oliver when he nicked one to Ash Brewer behind the stumps for 19. Shifnal were 33 for 2 after 7 overs. Chris Smedley replaced wicket-less Jon Dovey and produced a spell of controlled bowling. Cessford stuck again when he trapped Simon Gregory LBW for 5.

George Collins batted well accumulating runs through mainly singles and he and Tom Friend put on 68 before Cessford broke the partnership when Brewer took his second catch to dismiss Friend for 43. Collins reached his fifty before Cessford claimed his third successive five for as he clean bowled Tom Home for 4. Joe Chadwick and Collins had taken the score to 153 when Collins was clean bowled by Andy Ford on the last ball of the innings for a creditable is not inspiring 56.

The scorers and umpires had the handbook and calculator out at tea and calculated 154 to win and 140 for the winning draw. BGCC openers Jon Dovey and Mark Hooper both fell early giving Tom Friend and John Mountford a wicket a-piece. Alex Hepburn was joined by Graeme Cessford but before they could settle Cessford miss-hit one to be caught and bowled by Friend for 12 leaving the Green 29 for 3. Hepburn’s new partner Elliot Hennessy started confidently and had quickly moved on 28 with 4 fours and a six before being adjudged out LBW off Friend. Andy Ford was unfortunately run out for 1 after both batsmen hesitated taking a run. Ash Brewer played a useful supporting role as BGCC reached 100 and Hepburn reached his fifty.

With the score on 107 two wickets fell – first Hepburn was stumped by Simon Gregory for 56 off Richard Oliver then Brewer was caught behind for 4 off Tom Collins. BGCC needed 33 off 10 overs for the winning draw and 47 to win the game outright, but being 7 wickets down and having two new batsmen at the crease made that a more difficult challenge. Dannie Rees and Tim Williams batted cleverly taking plenty of singles and the score had progressed to 134 when Tom Friend re-joined the attack. He grabbed the key wicket of Tim Williams (clean bowled for 11) and put pressure on the other batsmen. Chris Smedley fell next caught behind by Simon Gregory for 2 – leaving BGCC 3 runs short of the winning draw total with 7 balls remaining. Agonisingly Blair Kingsland hit 2 to take the Green beyond 140 but couldn’t bat out the remains of the over. Tom Friend claimed his fifth wicket as BGCC were bowled out for 141 with 3 balls to go. Shifnal took 24 points and disappointingly BGCC took only 3 – but it was enough to remain just off the bottom of the table and within one win of moving up to mid-table.
