Romsley vs Barnards Green 1st XI On a fine day, with a firm but somewhat dusty wicket Romsley won the toss and asked BGCC to make first use of it. Rich. Williams and Jez Clarke opened very cautiously against lively quick bowling by D. Morgan and R. Beaumont. Runs were difficult to come by, and in the 10th over, with only 28 runs on the board, Rich. Williams getting under a pull shot, was out caught by mid wicket, running back for12. Paul Drinkwater joined Jez Clarke at the wicket and gradually the scoring tempo increased, and a partnership of 48 was built during the next 10 overs, for a team score of 76. By the 24th over the score had jumped to 96 when Jez Clarke was the next to go. He was too eager to get to his fifty, falling on 48 stumped off the loopy spin of P. Morgan, to be followed by Paul Drinkwater in the next over for sound score of 25. Two further quick wickets were lost before Tim Clarke and Adam Binks came together and proceeded to push the score along much quicker, getting to a team total of 164 before the next wicket went. That was Tim Clarke caught on 44, going for a six over long on, and not quite making it. The fall of this sixth wicket brought captain Chris Smedley to the wicket, who along with Adam Binks set about the bowling to carry the score to 240 by the 49th over, averaging nearly eight runs per over until Adam Binks went, caught at long off just two short of his fifty. The final over produced ten more runs to leave Chris Smedley on 35 not out and P. Harris 4 not out, and a final innings total on 250 runs. In reply to this total Romsley & Hunnington’s openers started briskly, reaching 59 for 2 in their first 10 overs. Their first wicket falling to Sam Spencer in the fourth over, with the score on 17, the second going to Rob McCard with the score on 53. Romsley’s batsmen continued to score freely, but lost two further wickets, a second to Rob McCard and one to Tim Williams, so that by over nineteen their score stood at 107 for 4 . Thirty run ahead of were the Green were at the equivalent over in their innings. Any doubts there might have been were quickly extinguished when Jez Clarke came on to bowl his spin. In his third over he took 3 wickets, in his fourth he took 2 more all with Romsley’s score stuck on 113. A match winning performance if ever there was one. Jez Clarke finished this man of the match effort on 5 for 19 in five overs, while Chris Smedley finished his special four over spell with 1 for 4 taking the last wicket in the 25th over. Romsley & Hunnington were destroyed, loosing 6 wickets in 5 overs for just 8 runs. A great first win for a determined “Barnards Green” team. |
Barnards Green 2nd XI vs RomsleyOn saturday the green were hosts to lowly Romsley, after
winning the toss the home captain decided to bat on what looked like another
fine batting strip.Jon Lewis and the vastley experienced Glendenning put on
an opening stand of 41 in six overs before Glendenning skied a top edge when
looking well set for 23.The green looked forward to amassing a large total
against the struggling Romsley side, it just goes to show that things cant
be taken for granted in cricket.A succession of poor shots and over
confident shots were the undoing of Wheeler,Thompson,Bell and Spencer all of
whom barely troubled the scorer, when Lewis was bowled for 36 the home side
were 91 for six. Not for the first time in recent seasons the more
expierenced players had failed only to be shown how to play by the
youngsters in the side,Lewis Hooper led the way with his maiden half century
for the seconds he played a mature innings defending stoutly and punishing
the bad balls. When hooper was seventh out for 51 it was left to the two
under fifteens James Scullion and Tom Clack to make sure the green reached a
respectable total Scullion was notout 43 and Clack notout 26 they put on 60
runs for the ninth wicket leaving the home side 240 for eight off their
allotted overs. |
