BGCC under 10s vs Worcester 3rd June 2013

Barnards Green Under Tens vs Worcester Under tens.

3rd June 2013

The Green hosted local rivals Worcester at their picturesque Newland ground in front of a large group of spectators determined to enjoy a beautiful summer’s evening.

Skipper for the evening, Jack Samson, was asked to bat first and sent in George Blannin and Stan Price-Ayres as his first pair and despite losing a wicket each, both players showed excellent technique with Stan finding the boundary whilst George was made to work hard against some accurate Worcester bowling.

The first change of batting brought together the exciting pairing of Tom Yardy who took full advantage of any loose leg-side deliveries as he raced to a chanceless 15 runs and the more cultured Ollie Davies who played straight and defended his wicket resolutely against some spirited bowling from Worcester. At the halfway point The Green were going well with 23 runs on the board.

Lewis Regan and Owen Throup became the second pairing to appreciate the importance of preserving their wickets as they successfully survived some very accurate Worcester bowling from Finn and Juna and 9 more runs were added to the total.

The Green’s final pair, Jack Samson and Spike Burnage, attacked the bowling from the start and also ran well between the wickets, picking up several quick singles. Spike was unlucky to be out but still contributed 7 runs whilst his partner scored 8, including one impressive boundary. A strong overall batting performance saw The Green finish on 246 but a number of easy singles had been missed along the way.

The Worcester bowlers had only given away fourteen wides and no-balls, quite an achievement at under ten level.

The Green knew that they would have to field and bowl well to protect their modest total.

Worcester openers Dan F and Alfie posted 16 runs on the board as some of The Green’s bowlers struggled to find a good line and Worcester seemed to be well on course for a victory. However, the introduction into the attack of Lewis Regan, Ollie Davies and Owen Throup against the second pair started to turn things around. Owen bowled a superb wicket-maiden and then saw Ollie repeat this feat in the next over and also contribute a run out.

Things got even worse for Worcester over the next four overs as George Blannin, Tom Yardy, Jack Samson and Lewis Regan picked up five wickets between them, including a double wicket-maiden from Jack.

Whist The Green bowlers were enjoying themselves, behind the stumps Stan Price-Ayres was making his own contribution, putting in a magnificent performance, stopping everything and preventing numerous byes and overthrows. After 12 overs Worcester’s score was back in deficit.

Worcester’s final batting pair came to the creese and immediately started to go on the attack as Dan L and Finn set about the tiring bowlers as their accuracy started to desert them. This pair batted superbly to put on some 32 runs taking the final total to 229 at the close.

Worcester will reflect on their loss of 8 wickets as against their hosts 3 as the main reason for defeat and whilst The Green’s overall performance in the field was good they will need to realise that thirty wides and no-balls is far too many to give away against opposition.

Thanks to both teams for a splendid evening’s entertainment, our sponsors PF2 and to the Newland ground staff for providing a lovely setting for a game of cricket.
