The Green Under 13 colts opened their 2006 campaign with an encouraging
performance against Hanley. Hanley batted first and scored freely until
LeGros clean bowled Lockwood. Matthews plundered the bowling past some
static fielding to reach 30 and retire. Lechmere and Amery continued to put
away the loose deliveries but Michael Ellis bowled well and removed Amery
for 27. LeGros (4-0-30-3) returned to take two quick wickets whilst Budd
dismissed Lechmere for 24. Some tight bowling at the innings end kept the
score down, aided by some excellent fielding by Tom Colshaw and super glove
work from Jon Howie, as Ellis (4-0-38-2) and Freeman both took wickets
leaving the Green needing 134 for victory.
Some very intelligent batting from Aston Kerr and James Herd got the innings
off to good start and found the boundary regularly. Kerr was run out for 12
and then Hanley put the brakes on as Humphries bowled four miserly overs for
8 runs and took two wickets. Herd being the first caught for 17 and the
unfortunate Howie stumped first ball. Bridges (12) and LeGros (16) staged a
recovery but the run rate was rising alarming and both perished going for
big shots. Matt Bannister playing his first game of cricket showed he has
the makings of a batsman as he and Freeman kept the run chase going with
some excellent running between the wickets. Hanley showed greater knowledge
of the game with some excellent field placings and good bowling changes,
Freeman was caught in the deep for 9 and Bannister perished for a super 17
but the Green came up 31 runs short, but had broken the 100 run barrier for
the first time!.
Well done boys a good start and let’s keep on improving.
