Newland Ground
Willing volunteers
are needed to “put Newland to bed” this weekend
( 4th
/ 5th October ).
It looks as
though everyone was busy last weekend so it was left
to the 3rds
to do the necessary at Northend Lane.
It is hoped
that this weekend will be more convenient for
some of the
1sts and 2nds to show up at Newland. <G>
Good Luck Richard !
Rich Williams is off on his
travels this weekend ( 28th September ).
Most people have a “gap year”
between School and College.
Rich is having his gap year
between School and … well School !.
Anyway Rich, we all wish you
well.
Visit exotic places, meet exotic
people and hopefully don’t pick up
any exotic diseases. Someone
will look after the team in your absence.
If you get near a computer then
send us regular editions of
“Lionel’s Tales” and we’ll make
sure they are put on the website.
Have a great time !.
Putting the ground to bed
This weekend ( 27th/28th September ) Roy asks
that anyone who has
a couple of hours to spare join him at The Green to put the ground
to
bed for the winter.
There will be plenty to do as usual so just turn up and
make yourself available.
Have you visited the Open Forum yet?
Good Luck Dan !
Dan Flynne left these shores to return
to New Zealand.
We wish him all the best in his
future career.
Just remember us all when you’re
famous Flynnie!

Questions that must be asked !
Marek, batting and requiring 14 runs per over to win off the last 5 overs :
“how do you think I should play it” ?
Marek – scoring against St Johns Ladywood:
How do you spell Ali ?
Is it AY DOUBLE-ELL EE WYE?
By popular request we have now
set up Open Forum. You have the chance to voice
your opinions about just about everything. Just keep it clean please. Look for the link from our main page.
South Devon Tour report
A touring party of 38 left Barnards Green
Cricket Club on the Bank holiday
Sunday destined for sunny Torquay.
Over a six day period, seven games were
played of which
the Green were victorious in four. Sunday saw a visit to the
delightful Stoke Gabriel where their
overseas Aussie star hit an unbeaten century
in setting the Green a target of 201 in
40 overs.
Kevin Ratcliffe (33) and Nick Rogers
(47) got the Green
off to a solid start, but the innings
then lost momentum
and a victory seemed unlikely until
number 10 Dave
Price strode to the wicket
and smashed the ball to all parts for a
quickfire 24 to see the Green
home by 2 wickets with an over to spare.
Monday saw a visit to Brixham on a
scorcher where the home team
scored 220 with Tim Clarke taking 5 for
29, but again the Green
were guided home by Phil Spencer (59)
and Tim Clarke 55no for a 4 wkt victory.
Tuesday saw a Green team weakened by
alcohol on the receiving end of a drubbing as
Torquay imported a number of Devon
county players who proved far to strong
for the Green despite an excellent 34 by
Roy Mayo.
Wednesday
saw the Green put out two teams,
one
visiting Paignton where they overwhelmed their youthful opposition
with Paul
Drinkwater hitting 97 and Dan Flynne 44
and Fluff
Churchill picking up 4 for 29.
A second XI
played South Devon where old stalwart
Dave Tetley
scored an excellent 81 and Sam Spencer took 3 for 13
to win by
62 runs.
hursday saw
the best game of the tour, with Abbotskerswell scoring
a massive
267 off 40 overs, but a maiden century by Tim Williams
and 33 from
Richard Birch saw the Green within 15 runs of victory.
On Friday
many of the party returned home for the funeral
of former
President of the Club Eric Spencer whilst a team under
the captaincy
of Dick Brown found themselves on the end of a thrashing
from Long
Ashton from Bristol.
This was another excellent tour once
again showing the great team spirit within the club.
Many thanks to Jez Clarke for his organisation of the tour
and to Max Lloyd and Tony Creese for their support and boost of
sales of Chardonay in South Devon.
Almost but not quite there.
The
final week of league competition was a thriller.
With
the possibility of The Green gaining promotion
on the
last day of the season it was vital for
the 1st’s to win and gain maximum points.
A great
team performance saw the Green achieve their objective
but
with other results failing to go our way we had
to
settle for 3rd in the league.
A great
effort and well done to all of our players.
Appeal of the week.
Bob Rogers for a caught behind…
Problem is, he was Umpiring at
the time.
South Devon final tour results.
7 tour matches completed.
4 tour match victories.
3 tour match defeat.
On Sunday The Green beat Stoke Gabriel
and followed this with a win
against Brixham on Monday.
Tuesday saw the tour party take
the short trip to Torquay to suffer defeat
at the hands of a very strong
team.
Wednesday saw most of the
touring party in action with 2 matches
being played at South Devon and
Paignton. The Green were successful in both.
Thursday’s match was against
Abbotskerswell where The Green narrowly failed
in a chase for 268 off 40
overs. The match did however contain a marvellous innings
of 105 from Tim Williams.
The final match was against
Long Aston near Bristol, where The Green were well beaten.
Reportable incidents
Fluff …. Lost swimming
trunks.
Jez …… Lost use of his right hand.
Dick …. Lost the will to live.
Brooker … Lost all sense of decency swimming in the fountain in
Torquay.
Jamie .. announced his intention to stand for 2nd
team Skipper on the grounds that he
can neither bat nor bowl.
Tour Quote of the week.
Andy Lamb after hitting golf shot
into a wood:
“ What’s over in those woods M.J ? “
Chris Hill :
“ Trees ! ”
Saturday 23rd August.
Pre-tour karaoke and party was a
sober night at the Green.
Pictures later.
Visiting Tourists
Last
week ( 11th,12th,13th August ) was a busy time
at The Green as we entertained
3 touring
sides on consecutive days.
On
Monday a team from Bocconoc in Cornwall visited us playing a Green side
skippered
by C.
Birdseye. Tuesday saw a very hard-fought encounter between the under 15’s from
Swansea
and our own Colts and
then on Wednesday we entertained Hartley
Country Club
from
Kent, regular visitors to this area, who, judging by their post match
conversation
and fines
allocation, obviously knew how to enter fully into the spirit of tour.
So
impressed were they with the teas that they actually stole the tea lady to play
for them
the
next day against Droitwich.
Mix-up
of the week –
Dick
Brown forgetting who won the toss, who called what and who was batting first!
Competition Time !!!!
Our friend Sammy F reckons that he
doesn’t appear on ANY of the pictures
taken on the night of the dedication of
the scorebox.
Well…..
If anyone can spot him, put a ring
around him and then send the
resultant picture to me then that person
will receive a “generous” prize. Happy hunting.

Quote of the week.
Directed towards the Colwall Doctor
who is in the brambles looking for a lost ball :
“
Tell him to get out of that bush – he’s a heart specialist not a Gynaecologist
“
Well
Done Liam !
Liam
Paddock captained the County Under 13’s side
which
took part in the Taunton
Festival recently and came second overall.
Liam
himself ended up as the teams leading run scorer with no less than 6 fifties.
More details can be found on the Festival
Website. Well done Liam.
IMPORTANT
BULLETIN: 5th August 2003 BIG
GAME TUESDAY NIGHT. WORCESTER CITY COUNCIL ( Jez’s mob ) VS BARNARDS GREEN
SOCIAL ( Paul’s mob ). This is a re-run of the match originally scheduled
earlier in the season and promises to be a great night !! STOP PRESS!!!! Jez’s seems to have found his
level playing social matches. Even his fielding is starting to
show signs of mediocrity. Anyway…. His mob won !
Quote of the week.
M.J ( discussing his decision on a
run-out appeal against D.Flynn ):
“ I would have liked to have
seen the replay “
Jez:
“Well Flynnie wouldn’t have
been in it !”
